A little about me...the teacher.
I have wanted to teach art as far back as I can remember, and I love what I do! I commute to teach 5-8 Art at Indiantown Middle School, which is about thirty minutes from my home. I am committed to being a lifelong learner, as evident in earning my MAEd in May 2009, and also by my quest for National Board Teacher certification, which I achieved in November of 2010. (Click here to view my updated Curriculum Vitae.)
In addition to teaching middle school, I have two years of elementary experience, four years of high school teaching experience, and also experience with Distance Education at ECU as a teaching assistant for ART-1910, an undergraduate level art appreciation course. I continue to create my own artwork through commissioned and commercial works. My current body of work combines hand-dyed, fused fabrics that are beaded and then combined with my figurative paintings and drawings. I was recently selected as one of ten art teachers nationwide to attend the Surface Design Association Confluence in Minneapolis, MN as a SDA Scholar. I will be attending workshops to foster my development as an artist and developing lesson plans to further infuse my curriculum with textiles. I can’t wait until June!
Outside of the classroom I continue to pursue the role of educator; I have taught art camps and classes through Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation (NC) and also Emerge Gallery (NC). This coming summer will be my second summer as Summer Art Camps instructor for the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach (FL). I also am active in cheerleading; I judge regional and national events throughout the year. I have worked with squads from recreation level to high school varsity co-ed; I currently volunteer at Palm Beach Gardens High School where I am the Assistant Coach for the Varsity Cheerleaders. I love to travel. I have made it a goal to expand my knowledge of other cultures and during the summer of 2009 I took a four-week trip to Japan with a group of educators made possible through a grant from Fulbright-Hays. (June 10-July 8, 2009). I am always planning some kind of trip!
I am married to my best friend John. He is also a life-long learner; he just completed his MBA this past December and is currently looking forward to beginning a PhD program in Marketing at Florida Atlantic University. Our family at this point consists of two cats, Mackie and Scooter.
People that know me personally and professionally will tell you that I am enthusiastic and committed to everything that I do. I am committed to my growth as an artist as well as an educator, which I hope reflects in the quality of instruction that I deliver to my students.
