Hey...that's my art! I already wrote about the new Art Hive, right? I think I did. I was probably delirious, I am pretty sure I posted something about it when I was sick last week and running a fever. Every time I see the cover, it just makes me so happy. I still can't believe Jessie and Angela picked this piece for the cover, it was a total surprise. Jessie texted me a pic of her computer screen as she was working on the cover when I was judging NHSCC in Orlando...I was at the judges meeting and when I saw it...completely floored. I couldn't (and still can't) believe it. The piece they chose is from (go figure) one of my many 'side projects. In July 2012, I was working with my 'round' series which was heavily influenced by Byzantine iconography and embellishment...somewhere in the midst of gluing crystals down...all that gold paint and bling made me think about Gustav Klimt, one of my favorite artists of all time...and, well...I got distracted and made some pieces. This was one of them (Klimt 1). Art Hive was still in the making, I was so inspired (and still am!) by my friend Jessie's drive and commitment to making her dream a reality...so I made this piece. A gal with a beehive hairdo (literally), looking at the viewer straight on as if to say, 'bring it. I'm going to make this happen'. And I added some bees..gold paint...crystals...and lot's of love. I presented the piece to my friend and thought that was the end of it... til I saw it on the cover in that text message. And as I am writing this...I am realizing that I need to make something special for Angela, the other 'queen bee' that made Art Hive a reality...hmmmmm....gonna have to think on that. It has to be something special... Gotta wrap this up...but I included some in-progress pics from CED13-72. These are basically the same pics from instagram, but I like seeing 'em side by side. I randomly pulled out one of the 'pre-collaged' papers I made yesterday...looked at it for a bit til I saw the figure in it...and then started sketching. And, well...here is what I came up with;

So I was working on my daily piece on Monday during my lunch...and I decided it was time to start adding some more art materials...the idea being to gradually build each week and see what happens at the end of the month but staying within the 'black and white' theme. I spotted some newspaper near my desk at school and...since I already started drawing the figure I used tracing paper to get the shapes marked off, then as a pattern to cut out the newspaper. I forgot to mention that the kids were testing in my afternoon art classes, so I had several small groups, so we all chilled out and had some time to free draw. I love drawing with my students. They even helped me make some decisions on where to add newspaper for CED13-70. (Thanks for the advice, guys!) I stuck with the same concept for today's piece, CED13-71, this time I cut and glued a newspaper shape first and used that to determine the figure, kind of working backwards from my approach yesterday. I even prepped several backgrounds for the rest of this week, arbitrarily cutting and gluing the newspaper shapes down...not really trying to make anything out of it, or putting any thought into it. I want to pull out the paper each day and let the image that is already there 'inform' me of where to take the drawing. At least, that's the plan. Sometimes, if I finish my daily piece early...I don't know what to do with myself. Sometimes...it just makes me feel like I should make another piece, or two more pieces- or ten. That is how I felt today. I started two sketches based on an editorial in Harper's Bazaar UK (Feb 2013), the page was a focus on tailoring and the models were wearing two bold suits by Gucci. I really liked the shapes, the combination of the enlongated figures and long, lean lines with the gathering at the shoulders and flared sleeves...so I sketched 'em out. I got my first later of color on both drawings while John and I watched one of our 'shows', then headed to the gym. I thought about finishing them tonight, but decided to post my latest works and update the blog instead.
So I will finish those tomorrow. And now...I sleep! First things first....I am feeling better. Almost...dare I say it...normal. Fingers crossed, I think I finally getting over this cold. Thank goodness.
Secondly...I was productive over the weekend...I posted the new pieces to my Recent Works page...and now...I waited to late to post to this here blog so I need to go to sleep, not stay up and keep writing so...check out my art!
I took a ton of notes on my tablet, that was my first time taking notes on it- much better than trying to read my scribbly handwriting (just ask my students and cheerleaders, they can confirm that!) And I may comment more later on some 'take aways' from the weekend...but for now, here is the slide show.
One thing I can say for sure, regardless of tie-ins to my own curriculum, or attempts to integrate art into other subject areas, which were both my original thoughts when I applied...Being in this seminar just reminded me of how much I love learning, and I love being around people that are passionate about what they do. More on that later. ...as much as I have enjoyed this intense pain in my head, the fever, the cough and the perpetual runny nose...dare I say...could I be getting a little of my sparkle back? Maybe. I went straight to bed after school, woke up with a few coughing fits...and somehow...I think I started to feel some of the pain easing away. If the pressure in my whole head would just go away, I would even take that. Fingers crossed.
Anyway, I did have enough energy to post all the pieces I have been working on to my 'Recent Works' page. Here is an overview of what was posted, g'night! ...still sick...been making art anyway...just haven't been posting the final pics or blogging...which really bothers me...but I would rather...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Ho ...had an AWESOME weekend in St. Augustine attending the La Florida seminar through the Florida Humanities Council. Along with some new knowledge, a few new pieces of art and (of course) some new jewelry pieces...I also brought a pretty nasty cold back with me. I finally gave in and went to visit the doctor tonight. (thank you, John, for driving me) Anyone that knows me...you know that I do NOT like to go to the doctor unless I have to...but...sometimes ya gotta do it. Grumble, grumble. Hiss. Boo. Blah. So I went. I caught a glimpse of myself when the door was shut and I thought, 'wow...I went out like this? In public?' My goodness. So...got some antibiotics...looking forward to feeling better...can't wait to get rid of this sore throat! And fever...ain't got time for you! PS...I have been keeping up with my daily art...it's gonna take more than this crud to keep me away from my art...but I haven't taken final pics, posted to my FB page/web or wrote about the work on my blog...that will all be caught up soon...but in the meantime...you can see in-progress works on my Instagram, @artinw_damuse (#creativeeveryday #teachingartist #floridahumanitiescouncil #laflorida...most recent posts)
