"This past  Friday, LWHS art student Pradeline, an 11th grader, won the prestigious Congressional Art Award.  Each Member of Congress selects one artwork that will represent their districts in the Capitol building in Washington DC. where it will hang for an entire year. She was also presented with 2 round trip Southwest Airline tix to Washington DC this summer as well as hotel and accommodations, to attend a special Art ceremony and red carpet treatment of the Nations Capitol. So, Congratulations Pradeline ! Confessions of a Overzealous Art Teacher in May...

Can you keep a secret?

Sure you can, you look pretty trustworthy.

Every year...like...EVERY...YEAR...I make a huge miscalculation.  I start brand spankin' new projects.  I don't know WHY I do this to myself- and to my students.  I just get so excited...kinda like when you go for that extra slice of pizza because it looks so good- but you are already full.  This is totally me- every single year.  Ya feel me?

Allow me to 'meme' it;

NOT THIS YEAR.  This year I ignored that inner evil Kermit and vowed to not make that mistake again.  Nope.  This is the year that we are gonna FINISH some of those crazy EOY projects that...ummm...we didn't finish.

(definitely whispered that last part)

There- I said it.  I have a bunch of fabulous projects that haven't seen the light of day.  But we are making it right- and we are starting right now.

First up- murals by my resident student-artist-future-super-star, or as we call him,
TonyBoi.

If I give this kid paint- he will PAINT.  (or really any material- any challenge, the kid is like a machine-he LIVES for making art!)   he top mural is actually new, just started this after spring break but I included what was an old Starry Night we started maybe...last year?  I can't remember.  It just wasn't happening.  Luckily, TonyBoi came in and started to give it a makeover.  From what he has told me it will be a modernized version, more of a street style, and may have basketball courts..but this will be finished by the end of the year.  (no pressure TonyBoi, I just put it in public on the interwebs...so...yeah)

...how about some ART HISTORY-INSPIRED pieces?!

This is a mix...okay, so the checkboard piece IS new...the paintings were part of the senior exams this year (they also made informational posters/documents), but the board has been in my room for a year- we just finally made use of it.  The wooden circles are scrap pieces gifted to us from the woodshop.  The idea is that this piece will be mounted to the wall with the circles attached via glue or screws (haven't decided which one) and then some of the wooden art history paintings will actually break the edge of the piece and spill out onto the wall.

Oldies but Goodies

I had some AMAZING visiting artists come back a couple years back and we did painted tiles and printed selfies on metal- yup, at the end of the year.  The work just never made it to the installation process- until now.  The metal tiles are out, thinking those will be glued and then covered with a varnish or shellac to hold them down and protect them...tiles have been counted and I have talked to our principal, Dr. Epps, about possible installation sites and methods.  We have our 'Chihuly Chandelier' (I know, I know...they're a dime a dozen- but this one is OURS and it's special) Just discussed a great location for this piece with Dr. Epps.  Last but not least in the 'oldies but goodies' category is our peace sign out of recycled bottle caps.  After a layer of resin or shellac this will be off to the media center.

...keeping my fingers crossed that this will finally be the year that all of these art projects will get OUT of the art room and out into the school so that folks can actually see them!!  Wish us luck!

(and send me the strength not to add anything else to my plate...because that is truly my weakness!)
