...who do we appreciate?

Teacher Appreciation Week.  I gotta say, at my school at least, it was a good one.  We had breakfast and all kinds of surprises during a red-carpet themed week topped off with a nice catered lunch today...really, it was great.

What is not so great...teaching in May.

We're tired, ya'll.  We're beat.  We're trying to make it, and still keep that pep in our step.  I am super enthusiastic ('extra' is how the kids refer to it....ummmm...I guess that's a good thing...) but even I am feeling May like a fifty ton weight on my shoulders.

It's like, because it's Teacher Appreciation Week you should feel excited and energized...but you are still just tired and trying to make sure everything is finished...and get the seniors squared away...kinda like this;

So anyway, I know that I am not alone- certainly not among my art teachin' friends.  I decided to share something that I was working on now that I thought was kinda fun, and also bring back an idea I started doing a couple of years ago that REALLY helps with making sure student art actually makes it home at the end of the year.

First up, the end of the year project we are working on now...

Art Teacher Problem: 'What to do with old art'

One thing that probably plagues any art teacher that is 'new/newer' to a school is a classroom (if you are lucky) that has quite the collection of 'old' student artwork.  That was the case with me.  When I started working here three years ago I inherited a mass of old student artwork from as far back as the nineties.  Heck, maybe even older than that.  But the work was so good...I couldn't just throw it out.  So I didn't it.

I kept organizing and reorganizing it.  I would re-stack it.  I would move it.  But truth be told, not only was it taking up valuable real estate in my storage area...but if no one could see it then what good was it to hold on to it?

At the beginning of this school year, I invited all the teachers to stop by my room to 'Deck the Walls' with the old art pieces I had squirreled away in my room.  It was a big success and a total win-win for all involved.  Click on the image to read the blog post about it from August, and to see more images.

Fast forward to this week.  I find...gulp...MORE old student art.  I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it...but it is so hectic with all the testing and seniors taking exams that I want to do another 'Deck the Walls' just yet.  So I put on my imaginary thinking cap (its pink leopard glitter, by the way) To come up with a new solution;

I would have students use the old art as the 'paper' to create the letters to make up quotes by famous artists to post all around the school.

So...we started the new project;

Start with a pile of old art...make stencils...trace letters onto old art pieces...cut out...create words

Here is an example of a finished quote. We will add the artist's name (Henry Moore), laminate and hang at the beginning of school next year. I didn't have to throw away the art, the school gets a face-lift AND the student get to help make it happen. #winning

Art Teacher Problem: Getting the work HOME
(and making sure it actually makes it there!)

This is actually something I started doing a couple of years ago and it really does work!  I wrote about it on a previous blog but in summary...the kids send pics of their art at home so I know the work made it home.  I give them extra credit, they have fun coming up with a creative pic to send...hopefully parents see some of the work...'wins' all around.  Last year the kids would just come up and show me a pic on their phones and I would check them off. (Click on the image below to read more about it)

Well, it was so much fun last year (I made a slideshow of all the pics and we watched that the last day of class!) I decided to do it again.  They haven't taken the bulk of their work home yet, but I did a test run with some clay pieces that went home.  This year we got a little fancy, the kids can send me their images via our remind.com app, email or even send via DM on Instagram.  Here are just a couple of the pics so far;

...that's it for now.  I need a nap...so I can tackle the rest of this busy month!  Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to you!
