This morning...when John and the cats were still sleeping, I got up early and finished up the last piece in the 'Bee Mine' series for February 2015. 'Finishing' a series is weird. Sometimes I don't want to stop, I feel like I just started to get into in, to figure something out. Sometimes I am ready because I want a change. Sometimes I tell myself, I am going to go back and more in this series at a later date. With this series, all of this is true. I really enjoyed the imagery and the recurring motif of the heart, bee and the overall colors...Valentine's Day pinks and reds...bumble bee black and yellows...peeps of bright blues...and the various yummy shades of deep chocolate skin tones. The hair...the natural hair that I think is so beautiful- I had fun playing and even venturing off into some other styles, short cropped styles, a fun up 'do and some glamorous dreads. And then there was the embellishments...beads, jewels, scraps of fabric, glitter, gel pins, puff paints...I'll tell you one thing- putting everything back will be quite a chore! ('cause you KNOW it is all color coded, every last bead.... #OCPDartist) And I love this series, I love these girls...Jewel, the star of the show (who I first introduced in my Miss Matchy Matchy series)...'Lady K' who was inspired by an awesome fiber artist friend...my tribute piece to Lupita Nyong'o, who is probably one of the most beautiful people EVER....and another piece inspired by the 'controversial' dreads of Zendaya Coleman at the 2015 Oscars....I love them. When I look at the series it makes me smile. And finally, the Queen Bee...and if she could talk she would say it's good to be queen, and that every woman is a queen, regardless of your hair or you skin or your body type...you possess beauty...and you have value...so don't forget that. Years back I heard this song by India Arie and it really touched my soul, and it is what I want this series to celebrate in some form, that sense of beauty and love. So I created a slideshow of the work with this song...click below to view the show and find out what the song is :) Now that the series is done, I'm gonna take a break.
Haha, no way! I have a piece I want to create for a show down south...something else up my sleeve (related to the Bee Mine series!) AND...I already know what my theme is for next month...just gotta figure out the media...more on all of this tomorrow...with sneak peeks on social media, of course!

...just a little of this and a little of that...wanted to post my daily piece with some close-ups of the accessories, 'cause I like how they came out...and some pics from the Howley's show...I'm not 100% but no more sick days, time to go back to work! ...here's what happens... I wake up after not sleeping, take my cold meds...start feelin' awesome, like, 'Hey, I am kickin' this cold's BUTT!' Then I run around and do a bunch of stuff...get exhausted, run out of steam, realize that the cold is still there...and it won't let me sleep... This happened to me yesterday...by the time I made it back home I was feeling pretty drained. I did manage to watch some of the Oscars after I napped, and even started a few fashion illustrations of a few of my favorite looks from the red carpet...I hope to finish these up sometime this week, maybe add some embellishments... Today...it didn't happen. Instead of kind of perking up a little after taking some cold medicine I had a raging sinus headache...which doesn't really go well with teaching classes of forty high school kids...even if they are REALLY trying hard to keep their voices down.
For my daily piece...I just kept going back to the image of Lupita Nyong'o in that pearl Calvin Klein gown. It was amazing- SHE was amazing. So...I abadoned Jewel and her lovely 'fro for 'Lula'...my version of Lupita in that gown last night. I figure it still goes with the series...I kept the color yellow/black color scheme...kept the embellishment...and even kept the natural hair, just went with a different 'do. ...and that's it. I think I am going to bed. At 8pm. Totally serious...night ya'll!
I have been blogging about art shows and happenings...but I haven't stopped and talked about my series...so...gonna do that now before I move on- the end of the month is fast approaching- eeek! If you frequent this ol' blog, then you know a little about the inspiration behind this series. (just in case, click here to catch up!) In a nutshell my inspirations are....bees (for Art Hive!)...Valentine's Day (ummm...'cause it's February and I am in love with Johnny Nice...but that's nothin' new!)...and AFROS! ('cause I love the way afros look AND it is my official tribute to beautiful ladies of color in celebration of Black History Month!) Well, Valentine's Day came and went and I felt like I needed to move a little past the red, pink and hearts and move forward with the bee theme...I am concentrating more on the use of different yellows and of course black to continue the 'bumble bee' colors and motif. Another thing that is happening is that I am having a BLAST playing around with the details in the embellishments...small pearls and jewels...lil' bees...bits of vintage and scrap lace and msc. trims. As for the last two days specifically...somewhere along my journey from San Antonio last week I caught a cold...and man, it just got worse as the week progressed. I am pretty good during the day with my handy dandy cold meds but at night...ugh. Trouble sleeping...can't breathe...coughing...not cool, bro. If you know anything about me, then you know I love naps and sleeping...so the last two pieces in particular are my homage to just that- sleep...gettin' that rest that is eluding me right now. So of course my gal Jewel is reflecting that in my daily art pieces! That being said...here some of the pieces reflecting this transition in the series...with some details of the lil' details that are making me (and Jewel!) smile!
...gonna make this somewhat short 'cause I am feeling a little under the weather and I think...fingers crossed...I just might be able to fall asleep for a little bit...and possible even be able to breathe through BOTH nostrils... First off...Friday after school was all about running ART errands! I dropped off five pieces from my current series at Howley's in West Palm Beach for the 'Love Hurts' show next week! I can't wait to see the art up at the restaurant...and then stuff my face! (feed a cold...right?) Next stop...dropping off three pieces for the Armory Art Center's Mad Hatter's Luncheon. I created these pieces about two weeks ago (all within a twenty-four hour period!) The pieces will be for sale, with part of the proceeds going towards funding art programs at the Armory, which is a special place to me...it's where I met Karen Nobel, then Jessie Prugh...Nicole Crane...and so many other of my art friends! Will post more info as the show gets closer...more in March!
Last up...the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival.
Let me start by saying I am a real dummy for not attending this sooner. I mean...seriously. I have been in Florida for six years now and this was my first time attending. I just didn't know it was so...AMAZING! I went early this morning to see how the whole set up thing goes down...and to support my colleague, Brent. I can't wait to go back tomorrow and see the finished pieces...and I am thinking that next year I might want to participate myself!! Here are some pics from this morning- enjoy! http://www.therickiereport.com/2015/02/16/jennifer-love-gironda-exibits-her-january-series-2015/ Well, we're back from a short trip to San Antonio, Texas. And it was a fun trip! John did a great job with his presentation at the AMA conference...and me? I fit in several ARTastic adventures...per usual. I created a fairly short slide show with some fun TEXAS music...check it out if you have a minute...or just under three and a half minutes... I gotta say, first and foremost...the San Antonio River really made an impression on me. She is the heartbeat of the city, and if you follow her you can get just about anywhere you want to be. So I made a little sketch of her...totally going out of sequence here 'cause I started the drawing AFTER the art museum...but...just wanted to say it.
Then I headed on down to the River Walk...made a pit stop at the convention center...they were having the state music convention and it looked like All-State auditions, too...so I left some angels there for folks to find. ...the last Angel was left up on the 38th floor of our hotel, the Marriot Rivercenter, where I had started that morning...overlooking the city of San Antonio, Texas.
...and TO THINK that when I made this dress a year ago my biggest concern was it falling apart as Sofie wore it on the runway and later the red carpet...nope, still here, intact and ON DISPLAY! After Sally over at SMASH kidnapped the dress for a while I brought it back to Palm Beach County to share with my students and it is now on display over at the Resource Depot in West Palm Beach.
Talk about RECYCLED art!!!! ...I am just BEEyond obsessed with my new series! It has everything...pretty ladies...hearts...bees...sparkles and embellishments...imma...need...a...minute... (passes out)
