NC Pop Up show

11/24/2018

Another back-home art show!  This one was a little different because we came home from Thanksgiving instead of Christmas, but I still went with a holiday-vibe.  My friend Christi from HS put together all kinds of activities to make it part of an overall community event complete with live music, holiday cards for local nursing homes, ornament decorating and crafts, my art show AND special guests Mr. and Mrs. Claus!

I did want to include a pic of my 'art assistants' back at the hotel.  We had to bring the kitties with us from Florida because Mackie broke a tooth biting Milky on the butt (seriously, this is my life)...so...we brought them with us so we could deal with Mackie's meds and just keep and eye on them.  Aside from both being added to the NAUGHTY list, they are also on the LAZY list- seriously, they were no help at all!

Lazy cats. They weren't interested in my angels- just napping on the hotel bed.

A return to #NovemberBlueJLG

Feelin' blue again...but kinda in a good way, as in another round of blue monochromatic BLUE artwork.  The decision to do this series comes from a variety of things, some good some not so good.  They makes sense in my head, might not make sense to other folks...but I will attempt to explain/give some background.

Let's start with May 2012.

Picture

May 2012 was my first year doing the daily art.  I had just spent March and April doing some kinda labor intensive mixed media work, and it's not that I was feeling burnt out- but I wanted to just keep it simple.  So that month I worked with a limited palette of blue Prismacolor pencils and markers to create my big-eyed girls.  Simple- but some of my favorite faces, really had fun with each piece.  (Click here to read more from a 2012 blog post.)

Fast forward to November 2015,
the first 'November Blue' series

Picture

My 'November Blue' series was a return to monochromatic blue- but this time acrylic on 12x12 inch canvases.  I used to mix in more paintings on canvas in my daily art but in recent years I have done less and less- mainly because the canvases just take up so much room.  This particular series was fun- I selected a song with 'blue' in the title and then created a piece based on that, with portions of the lyrics.

The next month, December 2015, I brought all of those blue paintings home with me to NC and did what would be the first of many 'pop up' art shows for the hometown crowd.  It was a great show, I had a nice turnout- so many faces I had not seen in years!  Oh, and I SOLD work!  Like...just about ALL of them.  Seriously!

Here is a blog post from 2016 (ummm...yeah...I posted about it a little late) if you wanna read more about that art show,

...okay...now forget the blue...
Now think about ANGELS.

Picture

If you know me then you know that angels are a reoccuring theme in my work.

Like...I REALLY dig angels.
Picture

And I beleive in them, the angels I mean.

I even know a few.  They watch over me.

Amy, Lucy, Dillon, Flossie
...my angel bench runs pretty deep.

Back in November 2014 I did a whole series of mixed media angels, based on the likeness of the late, great Amy German.  Here is a blog post from November 2014 with more details, https://www.jenniferlovegironda.com/blog/november-series

...and once upon a time, I left angels for folks to find.  A little something I like to call #AngelDropART

Picture
I have probably dropped over 1000 angels over the years...but I haven't done as many in the last year or so.  I feel like I allowed the frustration that I felt about the current state of the world, the despair for the loss of civility- I let that get to me.

But I can't let the woes of the world keep me from doing something that I know, however small, does make that world just a little bit better for the folks that receive my angels.  When we were in San Diego last week the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue was the final straw.  I just remember waking up in what for me is the happiest place in the world, crying over the news that these folks were killed in their house of worship.  That evil put out into the world- the only way that I can internalize it, rebuke it, and battle it is to put good out into the world.

It may not make sense to anyone else, but in my mind it does.  This month I will be making my monochromatic blue angels.  The angels will not be sold, they will be given away- but it will be tied to some type of 'pay it forward' or 'good deed' challenge, kind of like my #WONDERfulWomenJLG series from November of last year.  I am still figuring this part out, details will be forthcoming.

The angels represent hope, they represent love.

The blue represents so many things.  It represents Judaism- I can't stop thinking about those eleven people that lost their lives that day at the church.  It represents the sky above us, and the sea that I love.  It represents sadness- it represents calm.  And for me, it represents change- a wave of change.

And that's all I got, just my heART.

Quick trip back to Pacific Beach, CA

What can I say- it is my favorite place on this earth.

We typically go to California in the summer or over my spring break, but this year summer just didn't work out for us...and we honestly couldn't wait til the spring.  John found a good deal on flights, we found a cute rental apartment two blocks from the beach on Homeaway- and we just went.

Now, timing wise it was a little stressful.  Just a week before I was in St. Pete for the FAEA conference and we actually left the same day as a field trip- but we did it, and I am glad that we went...I can't wait to go back!

When folks ask, 'so what did you do?'
Man, I guess we don't do much.

Picture

But that's the best part.

The perfect PB trip just consists of walking up and down the board walk, coffee at the beach, our fav burrito spots...

And watching sunset.  We never miss a sunset- even if the 'marine layer' blocks our view we still go to see what glimpse of a sunset that we can.

Days late and a dollar short- but I finally uploaded the last of my October 2018 series to my web gallery and FB album.  I used to be so much better about this, but since I post my work daily either on my Instagram feed or in my stories it has made me slack off on posting the 'official' images.

Oh well, at least I am keeping up with the work...and lemme tell you, it was tough to do this month with conference and traveling but I made it happen.

Anyway, here are is a glimpse of the series, to see more click here!
