Started the final day of 2017 with a beautiful sunrise and some quiet time to think about the year...

Picture

...and just like that, I finished the last piece in my #DisneyJLG (revisited) series...and I completed another year of creating a piece of art every single day...my sixth consecutive year of daily artin'.

Picture

Here is a peek at each monthly series (below).  To view the images larger, check out my Gallery page.  Also, please note that I completed TWO daily pieces/series for October...'cause I am 'extra' (my students always say that, but honestly, I don't think its a bad thing!) annnnd...'cause I LOVE Halloween!

What now?  Not sure, gonna enjoy ringing in the new year with John and Mackie and I will worry about it tomorrow!

Remembering Scooter

My close friends and family know that our two little cats, Mackie and Scooter, really ARE our family.  We had to help Scooter cross over that rainbow bridge I have heard tale about...didn't think I would see it so soon.  The loss of this lil' gray kitty has hit me pretty hard, if you ever met him you would know why.  He really was a special cat, my little 'art assistant' and nap buddy...and I miss him, but I know that he is in a better place and free of pain.j

...thankful that we still have ol' Mackie...

Overall, Mackie is doing pretty well. We can tell he misses Scooter but he knew it was his time before we did. Animals know things.

'On the Fly' Fashion!

...I posted about my student Antonio winning the high school category for the district holiday card competition...but this was another 'win'!  Antonio's entry was awesome, but I knew it didn't show off the style that he is most known for...so the morning of his board meeting recognition I asked him if he would want to custom paint a necklace for me to wear to the meeting that night so that in the photo's I could showcase his art even more- he agreed!  I brought a large statement necklace from home and paper mached the back of it during my planning, then added a layer of white acrylic paint to give him a nice surface to work on.  He came in 7th period and came up with a style showcasing his signature designs and vibrant colors- and I wore it to the board meeting!  Winning!!
Picture...I actually have a whole Instagram dedicated to my love of jewelry- this pic is just one of 'em!

Flossin'

I set up my 'Flossie' tree again this year in my studio.

It makes me sad to think about Christmas without at least seeing granny at the nursing home, but the sparkles from the jewelry on and disco balls on the tree remind me that she is still with me.

I really did want to have a proper intro to my December series ready for the blog in a more timely manner, you know- before the 6th day of said month...

But see...something happened;
Picture
Shirt by Giselle and Mirelis...mouse ears by me

Folks, I turned 40.

Supposedly, this means I am 'grown'.
Or I should be by now anyways.

So what does any responsible grown woman do when she turns 40?  I packed my bags, loaded up the cats and headed to Disney with the husband- specifically EPCOT.  We LOVE Epcot!
Picture
(Top Row) Disney and John- my two favs (Middle) I had some leftover stars from my ears so I left them all over Epcot for folks to find (Bottom) Mackie and Scooter came with us! Traveling with these two clowns ain't easy but we have to do it...plus its kinda nice having them around...oh, and no big deal but that is me with MICKEY MOUSE. We shared a hug and photo. I think we might be best friends now.

I knew that I wanted to do something 'Disney' inspired for this month's series, but I wasn't sure how to begin.  I completed a Disney series in March of 2015 and had so much fun with those images...so that was in the back of my mind.    I also try to have some fun with my final series each year and plan ahead for travel and all the holiday events when planning my materials and whatnot.

I have really enjoyed getting back to the fashion illustrations, so I figured that was a good starting point.  And again, I have completed a Disney series before, so I actually looked to those images to get my start.  So far it seems like I am referring to those image, specifically the order of the images, and using that as my inspiration each day- designing a gown inspired by each Disney lady.  Someone on my FB art page commented 'Disney Couture' and I really love that idea.  So...don't expect these to be ready-to-wear fashions, they will probably be over the top!

As far as materials, my typical fashion illustration tools of choice (a pencil some pens, watercolors and my salt container) really travel well, so it's a good match for all the holiday hoopla.

That being said...here are my first six pieces of the series.  Please note that I have included the images from my first December series, as right now I am going in that same order;
Picture
(Top Row) the first six pieces of my first 'Disney-themed' series from March 2015 (Bottom) The first six pieces in the NEW Disney series!

That's it.  That's my fancy intro.  I turned 40, went to Epcot, and now I making Disney-themed fashion illustrations to close out 2017.

Back to that whole turning 40 thang.

I wondered if I would feel different when I turned 40.  Nah, same me.  In some ways, based on my life and what I have been through...I kinda stopped 'growing up' way back. I am okay with that- it's what makes me...well, ME.  This whole daily art thing has become an extension of that sense of play.  Each month I play within the theme that I choose, with my materials, The work is whimsical, colorful, sometimes has a sense of humor...I am having fun.

That's where I am at.

You are here. I am here. Living in THIS moment. Might as well be kind, have some laughs and share some heART!

Feelin' WONDERful...

'Oh Rickie, you're so fine
You're so fine you blow my mind, hey Rickie,
Hey Rickie!'
(to the tune of 'Hey Mickey'!)

My November 29th 'WONDERul Woman' is a local favorite- none other that Rickie Leiter!  Rickie runs a local resource called The Rickie Report and let's just say that it is one of THE go-to sources for the SoFlo art scene.  Gosh, I can't remember when it was exactly, a couple of years ago for sure...I met Rickie at an event geared towards artists learning to market their work at Arthouse 429.  (that was actually the first time I met Raquel, too!)  We really hit it off and we just kind of kept in touch.  I would see Rickie at local art events and somehow we became huge cheerleaders for each other.  There have been several times that I was surprised by a phone call from Rickie-it always seems like she knows when I need a little motivation.  I get off the phone recommitted to what I am doing as an artist and motivated to create.  She is so supportive of local art and artists, and we really are so lucky to have someone like her advocating for us.

Thank you, Rickie, for all of the hugs, and emails and phone calls.  You make me smile, you make me believe in what I am doing.  I can't thank you enough, I really do love you!

And look...Rickie loves me back!

Rickie is 'da best!

And the 'final' angel in the series is...

Gotta be honest- I didn't know who to end the series with.  Heck, I don't know if this series is over.  I may revisit it from time to time.  For the 'final' numbered piece in the series (which probably only matters to me and my OCPD self) I really just did not know what to do.  And then it hit me- I would make an angel.

#AngelDropArt

Picture
It's been a while, but it's long over due! Time for some #AngelDropART

And then it REALLY hit me- I would do a giveaway on my FB Art page and give folks a chance to nominate a 'WONDERful Woman' they know.  Boy- I am glad I did!  It was so awesome to see the comments coming in with names of women that had impacted the lives of others.
My intention was to do a drawing and choose 40 folks in honor of my 40th birthday (more on that in another post!) But when I wrote down all of the names I saw that I had exactly 40 participants, and then a few of them had nominated multiple folks- which I had encouraged them to do.  So...instead of leaving folks out I will be creating angels for all of the folks nominated- so a total of 59 angels.  I'll be working on those and I hope to get them mailed off before Christmas...hopefully I will get some photos of those 'WONDERful' ladies with their angels!

November 2017 series (well, all of the 'numbered' pieces)

That's the end?

NO.

...I couldn't resist honoring another WONDERful Woman-

Erin Fromkes!

Picture
I support Erin and she supports me! We gots heART!!!
I cannot say enough about this local artist and powerhouse.  She is amazing in so many ways!  Not only is she one of the most talented artists I have ever met, but she has been battling major health issues for years and still manages to make the work- and then some.  She really is an inspiration to me and so many others, and I have actually drawn her before (May 2014) ...but I couldn't resist drawing her again for this series...and gifting her the image at her solo show...which you have to see if you are in the area, it really is beautifully curated.  All of the work is recent- most of it from this year...paintings on canvas, a wheelchair, skirts...assemblages...a quilt installation...seriously, THIS is my happy place.
Picture

...that's all the WW art...for now...but I would also like to mention my 'WonderMan' behind the series...my long time friend, Jason Basden

Jason, or 'Mr. Jason' as I have called him for almost TWENTY YEARS now (holy cannoli...I didn't realize it had been that long!!!) is always my go-to source for anything related to costumes, comics, sparkles, Greek/Roman mythology, clay (OMG THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, MR. JASON!!!!)...and he's also great for hugs and side-splitting laughs.  He may be far away, but my times spent with him and my roomie Sally will always be some of my most special memories...three art kids running rampant around Jenkins Fine art center, and I hope we'll get to do that again soon sometime.

Behold- 'Mr. Jason' in all of his cosplay splendor (yup, he made it!);
