FAEA 2018!

10/23/2018

I really wanted to write this in-depth blog post about how awesome FAEA Conference was but...here we are, two weeks later and...yup, didn't happen.  What DID happen was some awesome networking, including major quality time with my art sister, Cassie Stephens...informative workshops and speakers...me presenting two workshops (!!)...coming back to papier-mâché with my own students...a field trip to the Boca Museum of Art and then...a trip to San Diego.   (I didn't mention my daily art, but ya'll know that goes without saying)

So yeah, all of THAT happened (and more on all of that in another post).  But a timely blog post...not so much.  I will do my best to make you forget by showing you tons of fun pics!!  Here goes;

My first workshop- FASHION ILLUSTRATION!

Picture
Above, some samples of my fashion illustrations.

What a fun time!  I really enjoyed sharing my love for fashion illustration with other art teachers! Right from the start I was super nervous- I actually had a real-life former fashion illustrator in my class!!  Whoa!  She had a great time, made AMAZING pieces (I mean...duh!) and she also later bought some of my work!! I was blown away!
Picture
I totally was not planning on selling work but I had offers to purchase my work so...I did! Here are some of my newest collectors! (Cassie already has some of my work but I included her anyway 'cause she's so stinkin' cute)

My second workshop-
 RECYCLED FASHION/JEWELRY!

Picture

Another fun workshop!  I brought TONS of my own pieces to share with the group, giving some insight on how I constructed the pieces...but mainly I just gave them time to CREATE!  Participants were invited to make any piece of recycled fashion they wanted- many made jewelry but there was a show, a hand bag, a mask and even a hat, too!  I couldn't believe how well-received the workshop was, it felt great!  I think that next year I will offer it again, but maybe break it into TWO sep workshops, one for jewelry and one for fashion!

Look for more workshops from me at the next conference- I had so much fun!

...And I attended workshops, too!
I also had some fun in the vendor hall trying out different products and learning about resources, art programs at various colleges and even professional development opportunities!

Picture
Literally..just had a chance to sit for a spell and paint with glazes and underglazes on tile :)

Old and new FAEA friends...man, so much talent!

Picture
My PBCATA friends, Miami friends (including my Hermitage studio-roommate!) Martin County friends, and even an old friend from ECU...so many fun and talented folks!

I may or may not have made a custom embellishment for a black evening gown to wear to the gala...

(Spoiler alert- I totally did!)

Picture
'Who are you wearing?' ...newspaper, VHS tape, phone cord, and a toilet paper roll- made by me...an hour and a half before the gala!

Oh yeah...let's just say I got my fair share of quality time with a rock star art teacher lady- this really made this my best conference EVER!

I would be lying my face off if I said that hanging with Cassie wasn't the BEST part of conference- cause it sure was.  I unofficially earned the job of getting her to and fro...which is pretty daggum hard because she is...well...Cassie Stephens.  (if you aren't in the art/art teacher world, she's kinda a big deal)  It was fun to be a part of that world for a few days, but more than anything it was fun to be reunited with someone I met for the first time this summer and immediately felt like I had known for years, to be reunited with a good friend- just with folks standing in line wanting to take pics with her.

She's a sneaky one- had pocketfuls of glitter for her keynote speech.  I was with her literally minutes before she went on, actin' the fool on the rolling chairs and she never let on.  So I was just as surprised when she tossed the glitter in the air as everyone else.  After waiting with her through picture taking we did a few silly videos and I saw the glitter on the floor.  It just made me think- Cassie is like glitter.  And glitter ain't for everyone, but for those that appreciate sparkle- we love it.  She makes everything and everyone around her shine, and if things go well you'll find some of that sparkle after she leaves and it will keep you sparklin' a little while longer.

Our first face to face meeting this past June in Nashville and hangin' at a fancy art gallery at FAEA conference.

Literally...hung out with this chica so much- it was the BEST.
Picture
...we are trying to sneak off and go shopping for an hour and she wears this fab frock. Ain't no keepin' a low profile with this dame, I'll tell you that now.

...so that was FAEA 2018.

I loved it!  Can't wait for the next conference!!

This month is all about the adventures of Winnie the Witch, her little black cat Ricky and Chadrick the baby spider, inspired by the 'Mabs Drawlloween Club' daily prompts.

Here's a link to last year- that was my first year participating in Mab's challenge.  I also did Inktober at the same time, so two pieces a day.  This year I felt like I had so much going on with going to NC, FAEA conference and also our CA trip so...I decided to just choose to do one.

Trip back home to NC

My sister in law flew me in from Florida to organize closets.

True story.
Picture
Before I headed to Greenville I drove to Sanford for the night to see momma and Johnny, and Morgan and the kids. Momma was sick and Morgan had a class the next morning, but it was nice to visit even if it was just for a little bit. Plus- I got to have some of of my niece Savannah's leftover birthday cake! Then I headed on over Greenville to get on those closets and visit for a spell.
Picture
This was such a highlight for me- visiting my alma mater with my niece, who also LOVES art!
Picture
Another highlight- setting up the beginnings of a 'gallery wall' in Gemma's room for her art- and two of my pieces that I mailed to her when I got back to Florida. Before I left, I drew this lil' mermaid pic for her to color and add to her wall.
