This show was last minute for me- I happened to stop by and check on my AP girls that are working with Joyce over at Flamingo Clay Gallery earlier in the week and she asked me if I had some mermaids for the show.

Do I have mermaids?!  You already know!

So I prepped some mermaids and took them over to the gallery and added the opening to my Friday night plans.

Here are the mermaids that I put in the show;

Mermaids from various years, entire body of work can be viewed on Instagram by looking up #MermaidArtJLG

This particular show is even more special because Joyce featured clay pieces my students created with her!

Only one of the gals was able to make it for the opening...here are some

Summer fun...and I finally got to meet my ART SISTER!

Blog?  Schmog!

Okay...haven't updated my blog in 20 days...but it IS my summer break- and I have been enjoying it.

Plus, for some portion of that time I was deep in the mountains of North Carolina with no Wifi and NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL.

Yup, I was 'roughing it'.
Picture
Picture
(Left) Seriously- look there in the background, that lil' cabin....that's where we stayed. Not a lick of wifi or cell phone signal or lights once it got dark...yikes! (Right) Might as well take a walk down a dirt road with my niece, since we are down on the farm

While we were that far out west, we decided to head on over to Nashville...and I finally got to meet the fabulous Cassie Stephens- and deliver her some copies of the lastest Art Hive Magazine,
'cause she's in it! (I would know, I did the interview!)

Picture

Meeting Cassie in person...kinda wasn't a thing because it was like I was meeting up with an old friend, which confused both of our husbands when they found out this was our first time meeting in person- they thought we have known each other for years!  Ha, we sure fooled them!

No big deal, just sharing this article about this amazing art teacher from TN with...wait a minute...

...and while I am thinking about it,  a BIG SHOUTOUT to www.stellabluephoto.com for the super fun-colorful-fabulous-amazing photos of Cassie featured in the interview!

In honor of Cassie's DIY recently retired crayon shoes, I decided to honor her design skills in my daily art- and I sketched those shoes as my daily art and gave'em to her.  (she already has them up in her classroom art gallery- I feel so honored, that is my second piece!)

While in Nashville, John and I  decided to take an impromptu trip to Louisville, because...well, just because.  Oh, and Justin came with us #RoadTrip

Picture

This was by far the best 'temporary studio' set up of my entire trip.
John booked a great room overlooking the river and I basically took over one of the big ol' windows.

And that is basically it.  Summer, man- I love it.

The first week I was getting adjusted to my new non-schedule for the next couple of months.  Then we did the extended road trip.  And now we're back, and I am getting back to my non-schedule.  I usually plan tons of stuff to do in the summer because I am a busy body like that...but not this time, and I gotta say...it's pretty great!

Series, interrupted...'The story of the June change of heART'

6/6/2018

On occasion, I can 'spin a yarn'.

(Actually, I really do know how to spin yarn...haven't done it in years, but I do have that skill.  #RandomFacts)

But the yarn I am spinnin' today is the story of how it came to be that six days into my June series, and after a pretty big Amazon order- I completely abandoned my idea, made six new pieces from scratch and went in a brand new direction.
Picture

I had it all planned out, my summer artin' I mean.  I had planned on FINALLY playing around with these alcohol ink things- that was going to be my June series.  I had won a gift card and went on a big #TreatYoSelf shopping spree courtesy of the husband's Amazon Prime account.  The packages started coming at the end of May and the last one actually arrived today.  Alcohol inks, Yupo paper, blenders...heck, even materials for what I was planning for my July series, too!

I was on top of my game.  I felt really organized. I totally adulted.  #GrownWomanStuff

But then on June 5th, I saw the news that accessory designer Kate Spade had died- she committed suicide.  And it just really stuck with me.

The thing is...I'm not really a designer handbag kinda girl.  Growing up we never had money, certainly not for fancy handbags and shoes.  Heck, when Keds were popular I couldn't afford them.  I remember my stepsister gave me her old pair, which I couldn't fit- I took off the labels and glued it to the back of my plain white shoes from Rose's.

I probably didn't have my first 'designer' handbag until I was teaching at Indiantown Middle School.  I won teacher of the year and one of my gifts was a Coach wristlet, picked out my my super stylish and fancy friend Siddhi.  I had never had a real Coach...well, anything.
  After that I did go through a period where I would buy the smallest Coach wristlet for myself to mark milestones...but that was it as far as me buying fancy things for myself.  My cousin Krista gave me her old Tory Burch shoes (barely worn!) because she got another pair since those didn't fit her quite right.  My friends all chipped in and bought me a vintage Badgley Mischka bag for my birthday one year, it is super sparkly and I only bring it out 'for special' (like granny's old fancy towel set)....and I John's sister gave me one of their mom's vintage Fendi bags, one of my most beloved pieces, another piece I only bring out on special occasions.  Those are my 'designer' pieces.  Everything else is a thrift or clearance find.

And the thing is- I never owned a Kate Spade bag.  But the fact that someone so talented and notable took their own life...it just made me think about how things aren't always as they seem.  Folks can be hiding so much hurt, even if they seem strong, or seem like that have their life together.  We are fragile- all of us, designer or no-name brand...we only have one life to wear.

And I just started thinking,
'Maybe I should do something else this month?'

During my May series, I had purchased one of my favorite 'treats', the 'Vogue Paris Collections' magazine.  I will splurge and buy at least one a year.  It's a splurge because its kinda pricey, but when you love drawing fashion it's worth it.  When I was having this internal debate I kept seeing that magazine sitting on my desk;

...it just seemed like everything was pointing towards fashion- again.

Heck, even Milky seemed to be telling me to go that route;

Picture

All silliness aside...I just really felt like changing my theme was what I needed to do.  I felt compelled to draw handbags for this month, in tribute to all the talented designers out there whose work makes us smile through their use of color, texture and pattern.  And also thinking about the 'baggage' that all of us carry with us...

I cannot really articulate any more that that.  I really want to- but the words just won't come to me.  It just had to be a celebration of handbags this month.  It had to be.  So I put away my alcohol inks and the pieces I had started to re-start this series.  The funny thing is, once I made that decision a better idea for my July series also came to me...and I will be using the alcohol inks as a portion of that and also revisiting a previous theme that I really enjoyed- so watch for those next month.

Here are the bags for the first six days;
Picture

...and just want to leave this here...

...'cause we all have that 'strong friend' that seems to have it all together.  Or may YOU are the 'strong friend'  In any case, check on that friend...self check on YOU.

May 2018... #WeddingBellesJLG series wrap up

6/4/2018

I'll go ahead and say it now.  I lied.  This ain't no 'series wrap up'.

There is NO WAY that I will not be revisiting this theme- it was SO MUCH FUN!!!

That being said...I am behind in posting my June series, right now it is a bunch of experiements and I hope to be brave enough to post them in full tomorrow...on account of it's something brand new to me so I am like, waaaaaaay outside of my comfort zone and kinda freaking out.

But back to those ol' wedding belles!  I seriously LOVED this series.  I mean, some of the pieces I enjoyed more that others, but just looking at and sketching wedding gowns was something I really enjoyed.  I think that the toned paper was a good choice for the works, I really like how the white paint and pencil looks on that tan background.

But there were a few pieces that stand out for me...

Lovin' me some Liris.

In my previous post I wrote about being excited to see one of my favorite Project Runway models featured in a bridal campaign- the beautiful Liris Crosse.  Well...I was so excited that I went back and drew two more pics of her as 'extra' pieces...just because!

...and Liris saw the pieces and I will be mailing those out to her, hoping she shares a pic when she gets 'em.  If she does I will post it!

Goin' GLOBAL

At the end of my series I started thinking about bridal gowns from different cultures...and that led me down a internet rabbit hole.  I found waaaaaaay too much.  I narrowed it down a bit and just jumped in and started drawing.

Lucky for me my good friend Siddhi was only a text away to give me some leads on designers. I checked out designers she told me about from India, and then found even more...next thing I know I was immediately swooning over all the details, and of course the SPARKLE.  Gahhhhh.   I have already requested that she renew her vows so I can get all gussied up and see this beauty first hand.  (oh, and she also did a traditional american wedding, so she had a second WHITE gorgeous dress...'cause she is fancy like that!)

Here is my girl Siddhi with her husband Chris, and the three pieces I created based off Indian designers; (from Top to bottom) Ritu Kumar, Tarun Tahiliani and House of Kotwara

And then I was thinking...what about a wedding dress created by an African designer?

I found WAAAAY too many inspiring gowns- finally decided on this one...but I feel like this will definitely be a starting point when i revisit the series;

Annnnd then I thought, let me go back and check out more Asian designers...

Yup, another couple of hours drooling over rich embroidered fabrics.  I finally just picked a gown BY Guo Pei and forced myself to end my search...for now...

Okay...enough already, here is my daily work, and some extra pieces 'cause I really LOVED this theme!
