Finally- I can let folks know!

John and I had went on our usual walk and we got caught in the rain.  We ended up stopping in one of the restaurants to dry off and get lunch (actually had to go to the laundry mat and dry our shirts after that!) and I received a text from my student, Nehemie.  She said my name was called over the announcements for some kind of award.

Turns out- it was for Teacher of the Year for my school, and the Dwyer nominee for the Senior High category.  Yup, found this out when I took off from school...and was across the country!

I waited to make a 'public' announcement until I had a more concrete thing to share- like this lil' shoutout in the Principal's newsletter;

Remember...Renew.

The lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary will forever haunt me.  I  remember watching the news and just thinking about those children who lost their lives.  And every year I take a minute to say a prayer for those lost, and for their families.

This year I honored them in my daily art, each child and adult life represented by  Christmas ornaments, fallen.

But not broken.

The figure is in a somber pose, looking down.

But something happened, also on this date.  On the seven year anniversary of this tragedy the local football team, Newtown High School, won the state championship for the first time since 1992.  Some of the kids on the team had siblings that died at Sandy Hook.

If you have been involved with sports then you know about the power of athletics to bring a group of people together.  As a coach, a teammate, a fan...there is just something about  sports that can have a transformative effect.

I created my daily art piece to celebrate this victory, turning the fallen ornaments into stars, shining their light down on the world they left behind.  I am glad that this community was able to come together and create a positive memory for this date.

We don't do much. Eat $3 bean burritos, drink coffee, walk the boardwalk. But its our favorite thing. Ever.
