Over the summer we usually travel quite a bit. This summer we didn't travel as much, just enjoying our new place and relaxing a bit, especially since I had a three-week residency coming up. One trip we did make was to Austin, Texas. Our purpose for the trip? Two words- Willie Nelson. Yup. Earlier in the summer we were talking about live music and the conversation turned to Willie...we have always said that we want to try and see him as many times as we can...just so happened to see he was playing in Austin on the Fourth of July...we've always wanted to go to Austin...we LOVE Willie so we booked plane tickets, a rental car and a cute lil' condo right in the middle of everything and made it happen.

This really was a highlight of the trip. We were on our way to breakfast (Juan in a Million, breakfast burrito, I need one now!) and I spotted the fun green sign on our drive in and we stopped after breakfast. The owner, Raul, was super helpful...and the shop was FILLED with beautiful handmade items from South America. I went in with the intention of buying a piece of jewelry for myself and looking for a gift for my Leo-girl's upcoming birthday. (mission accomplished!) Raul told me about the different pieces and was really helpful. I had noticed the art on the wall...and after I had been there a while he let me know that HE was the artist. I was floored. We shared some artist stories, and he even gifted me a piece of his heART. So if you go to Austin, go and support this kind and TALENTED soul! | Corocoro |
HOPE Outdoor Gallery
Another stop-the HOPE Outdoor Gallery. It was PACKED! I loved the explosion of color EVERYWHERE...but also the fact that it was a living, ever-changing work of art that we were a part of. Seriously, if you go to Austin- GO THERE. And if you DO go there, make sure to wear shoes with a good grip so you can get around the site easily and safely. You can climb up to the top and see a great view of Austin...which John got to see but I didn't. Oh- and I created a special #AngelDropART stencil and left my mark! | |
Annnnnd finally, the reason behind the trip...
WILLIE NELSON!!!!!!!
My excuse? Ummm...I don't have one...I was kinda playin' and feelin' all summer-breakish...does that count?
Okay, so here is the overall series together;
Sometimes it is easier than others to begin a new series. This series was kinda tough at first. I had just finished my #MythicalMayJLG series, which was more detailed drawings on toned paper. I had to do some research for each image, too so I think that is why I wanted to 'loosen up' for my June series. (that, and also the fact that I wanted to celebrate the start of my summer vacation!) and it may seem weird but that idea of going with a less detailed style made it harder. |
In my mind what I wanted to create were sketch-like pieces- black lines painted with bits of color and then allowing the white of the page to come through. Oh, and of course some kind of bug reference. I think originally I intended to branch out and explore different bugs...but in the end it was lady bugs, bumble bees, one june bug and butterflies...always butterflies!
So I began the first pieces...with the idea of a whimsical lady bug gal. I don't usually show the whole body in my daily pieces, so I did for these first five in the series. If you are familliar with my #AngelDropART gals then you can see where I am starting to head in that direct on the 5th piece;
The final image in the series, shown larger (below) on the far right was in response to something that happened that made me think about women becoming stronger when they build each other up rather than tear each other down.
Now...on to July!
Wait...it IS July! Yikes!!!!
Happy Saturday!!
Check it out! I just added a Fashion Camp wrap-up post to
STUDIO 2-110
...which inspired me to look back through my pics and I came across some related fun stuff to share (again!)-
like these examples of student creations;
...and my own 'Trashions' I have created over the years,including the 'Art Hive Wedding Dress' that really introduced me to creating recycled looks...
...and finally, probably my favorite thing- recycled/upcycled accessories!
I am kinda procrastinating a bit because I need to post my last June pieces, and also finalize my July theme...so more to come after a nap!
