Starting off a brand new series each month can be a little daunting for me...starting off the first piece in a new series in a brand new YEAR? Now that is next level intense...for me anyway.
Looking back on my work from 2012-2016, I am most excited when I see a cohesion in my work from month to month. I know that some months I went off on a tangent because I wanted to try something new (like the #BelleJarJLG series)...or wanted to work on a skill (like my #LegendaryMenMusicJLG series)...and I know what my reasons are for works that disrupt the overall style of the work when viewed as an entire year, or as the whole five years...
That being said, I think for this coming year I want to try to keep my work in the same style. I reserve the right to change my mind about this, but right now I am thinking long term- of that overall body of work a year from now. I really enjoy creating my 'girl', so I would like to try and stick with that or something very similiar throughout the year, within each monthly series. I am thinking that I can break out and explore any other themes/styles in the various side projects that I alway seem to give myself. Again- I might change my mind...we'll see.
It was tough to decide where to start 2017. When I was creating my on-line document showing all of my daily work I kept hearing that 'Calendar Girl' song in my head; I had never watched this performance...but when I did, it made me think of my favorite scene from Grease 2; With the theme of 'Calendar Girl', I made the first two pieces while John and I were in Daytona for New Year's. The first piece was all about NYE shenigans...the second about all those resolutions...then on to the third, where I was thinking about my own continued resolution/goal to make art every day... Side note, piece #3 almost made me go with an entirely different (but really fun!) theme...but after consulting with my girlfriends we agreed to save that theme for later. So I moved onto February, and I created two pieces to represent Valentine's Day. And then I stopped myself. 'Oh my- I have NO plan'. So this morning I printed a blank calendar and started writing all the months with their different holidays and observances, thinking which ones I would want to illustrate. Then I printed a blank calendar filled in the first few, then started from the end of the month and worked backwards. I am a little frustrated with myself that I didn't do this earlier because I will actually be back tracking to add one or two to 'January' and then go back to February...but I am going to try to just get over it. (and I may switch their physical order/location in the on-line gallery and album just to calm my nerves...'cause I am crazy like that) Long story short...the new theme is #CalendarGirlsJLG ...and here are the first five pieces!
