So, full disclosure- from time to time I have a small mental meltdown trying to decide my next series. Sometimes it happen organically- I inspired by a holiday or observance that falls during that month, or by an event or trip that John and I are taking. For 2020...I kinda felt a little pressure. (self-made pressure, of course) One reason is that not only being a brand new year (year #9 for me making daily art!!) but I mean...it's a whole new decade- it's 2020, ya'll!
I had already decided that the coming year I would commit to doing fashion illustrations for the full year. I really love drawing fashion (hence the tag I use the most on Instagram, #DrawnToFashionJLG) I just want to see what will happen if I really focus on one facet of my work. DISCLAIMER: I may still venture off here and there with a mini-series of portraits and/or my 'big-eyed gals'...but as of now I am committing the daily pieces to fashion illustrations. I wasn't sure about the actual THEME for the month. I kept seeing 'roaring twenties' everywhere with NYE coming up. I thought about focusing on art deco, lorrtt knows I love to incorporate art history into my work whenever I can. But I wasn't feelin' it- needed something more. And then stumbled upon a post from a fun account I follow on Instagram- the 'Beehive Blondes'. They are two vintage loving DJ's doing events in NC, mostly Wilmington. They were promoting their NYE event, 'Deco Disco'...and that became the inspiration for my series. The idea is that the series will begin with fashion illustrations based on 1920's 'deco' fashions and then transition into 1970's 'disco' style after mid-month. And that is the inspiration BEEhind the series.
